Welcome to My Nerd Adventures! I am the Nerd Adventurer and my name is Sondra.

I enjoy traveling and taking pictures, but I’m a bit of a nerd … see I love learning new things and tend to visit places of historical or biological (ie animals) interest. Literally, growing up every summer our family vacation usually included a trip to some Civil War battle field, plantation home, or presidential manor. Now that I’m all grown up, guess what my idea of a vacation is? Going to see a historical site! Or some other educational trip. But I’m also a HUGE animal lover, so places where interesting animals – such as the elephant seal pictured here at Elephant Seal Beach in San Simeon, CA – are also places that I’ll visit. Now that I’m on the West Coast, there’s a whole different history here that I get to explore and learn. So learn a little, see a little, and above all — have fun!

I don’t have a tons of money, so right now my trips are hardly exotic. That said, I have fun with them and I really want to remember what I learned and maybe even share the fun with fellow nerd adventurers! Who knows, maybe someday I’ll even find a fellow nerd adventurer to visit some of these places with. I try to do one trip a month, at least a day trip right now. There will be no set schedule for this blog, so I’ll post after a trip when the impressions are fresh. While I focus on historical sites, I don’t get too bogged down in the details of the history. I’m not going to be writing a historical essay for these posts.

I’m also an amateur photographer. By that I mean I have a pretty decent camera and some lenses that I play with. Sometimes the shots are amazing, sometimes… not so much. Another goal I have with this blog is to keep learning how to be a better photographer. You’ll notice the images will be watermarked with MyNerdAdventures.com but also with DW Photography. DW – that’s me, or rather my Creative Name. All of my creative and historical endeavors have been done under the name of Dravon while my personal growth and professional development stuff is under the name of Sondra. If you want to snag an image, please feel free to do so but leave the watermarks as they are. That’s all I ask.

Until next time, adventure on!

About the Image:

Every winter, a beach in San Simeon California plays host to elephant seals as they give birth to the next generation. I visited this year on February 03, 2018. This young male was on the beach, near the surf’s edge. He turned to give a shout to a fellow young bull and I caught him mid-bellow. I love that the image was able to capture the battle scarring already visible on this guys’ throat. He’ll be ready for Beach Master in a few more years! Stay tuned for that trip post with more pictures coming soon.
